Winter Harmony, John Henry Twachtman
This wooded landscape is entirely composed of cool, pale tones of white, gray, blue, lilac, and golden beige in this nearly square painting. A stream winds back through snowbanks. Snow covers steep banks that slope toward the stream. Some of the tree branches above may have hints of foliage in the form of tan and pale pink flecks. The paint is applied loosely, leaving some brushstrokes visible, giving this scene a soft, hazy appearance.
Twachtman was best known for his impressionist landscapes, though his painting style varied widely through his career. Art historians consider Twachtman’s style of American Impressionism to be among the more personal and experimental of his generation. He was a member of “The Ten,” a loosely-allied group of American artists dissatisfied with professional art organizations, who banded together in 1898 to exhibit their works as a stylistically unified group.
Available as a fine art print and as a stretched canvas panel (heavy fine art canvas stretched over 1.5 inch deep edge solid wood frame).
