About Derwent Lees
Born on November 14, 1884, in Tasmania, Australia, Derwent Lees emerged as a prominent landscape painter of his time. He pursued his artistic education at the Slade School of Fine Art in London from 1905 to 1907, where he later became an assistant drawing master, teaching from 1908 to 1918. Lees formed close associations with notable artists such as J.D. Innes and Augustus John, collaborating with them in regions like Dorset and Wales between 1910 and 1913. His career was marked by extensive travels across Europe, including visits to the south of France between 1912 and 1914, which profoundly influenced his artistic vision.
