In the picturesque Val d’Aosta of the Italian Alps, J. M. W. Turner found inspiration. His painting, “Val d’Aosta,” from 1840-44, captures the mystery of the mountains shrouded in swirling clouds. The rich foreground contrasts the hidden mountain pass, creating a disorienting yet captivating effect. Turner’s technique, with thick impasto and transparent glazes, gives depth and luminosity.
